A trend that I have noticed very often in my time as a Physiotherapist is the belief that if we wait long enough our pain will go away. So often a patient makes an appointment because they are desperate and in a lot of pain and I listen to the patient’s history and they have had the pain for weeks or months before they come for Physiotherapy treatment. So How long should you wait before getting physiotherapy?

Then once they have used my Physiotherapy services they remark about how much better they feel and say “ I should have come much sooner, I wouldn’t have had to suffer for so long!” It is ok to wait a week to see if an injury or pain improves by itself.

But don’t suffer unnecessarily and if the pain persists then see a Physiotherapist to get a diagnosis and treat the underlying cause. Another reason this is so important is that acute pain becomes chronic pain after three months which leads to changes in your brain related to the area of your body where the pain is coming from. This makes treatment of the condition more complicated and difficult and your body can take longer to heal. How long should you wait before getting physiotherapy?
